This painting or the river at Shotley Bridge is the omly one of many beautiful sections of this part of the river Derwent. Shotley Bridge in well known for a number of reasons with probably the most famous being the sword makers. A group of Germans settled in Shotley Bridge in 1691 evading religious persecution because it was a very remote area and the soft water of the Derwent was ideal for tempering steel.

This church is even older than St. Peter's with part of the tower dating back to the early 9th century when it is recorded that a church existed on or near the site and that the 12th Bishop of Linisfarne was consecrated at 'Biguell' in 803. The present church is largely 13th century and was extensively restored in the 19th century.

Shotley Bridge is a village in the Derwent Valley next to Consett in County Durham. Shotley Bridge was once the heart of Britain's sword making industry. The village is set in beautiful countryside, surrounded by woodland. Shotley is believed to be a corruption of Scotley and is thought to mean the ley, or woodland clearing of a Scotsman or clearing where pigeons are to be found. The name Derwent comes from Brythonic/Old Welsh and means "oak river".

Walking or cycling between Consett and Rowley on the coast to coast track you need to cross the very impressive 'Hownsgill Viaduct'. A word of warning, you do need a good head for heights.
Before the viaduct was built, rail wagons transporting materials between Consett and Rowley had to cross Hown's Gill gorge and be lowered down one steep side and hauled up the other side on a system of inclined tracks by a stationary steam haulage engine.
In 1857, the 12 arch, brick viaduct was built 175 feet above the gorge floor and 700 feet across. It was used to transport goods from Consett to Stanhope via Rowley and Waskerley for 111years.
The railway became redundant in 1968 after the short sighted decision of the then minister of transport Dr Beeching who closed rail lines right across the country. We were lucky that the line was converted into a cycle and footpath.

Hadrian's wall is quite understanably the most popular attraction in northern England. It streaches 84 miles between Newcastle and Carlisle and was started in 122AD and completed in 130AD, not long at all considering present day building projects! This picture is west of Housesteads where visitors can see the remains of one of the forts which were built at intervals along the wall.
