Although this flower can be seen in bloom at any time of the year, spring is when the masses of gorse gives a wonderful yellow glow to the countryside. This is so frequently accompanied by a fall of snow, letting us know that, although sring is here, winter is reluctant to let go.

Rowley is on the A68 outside Castleside, Consett, Co. Durham. This painting was done following one of my many walks through Rowley.

This small wood is situated next to the caravan park at Allansford, Consett, Co. Durham. It has public footpaths through it and makes a very interesting walk at any time of the year.

This area of Northumberland, New Ridley, Stocksfield, is criss-crossed by footpaths of a variety of distances. This is a short walk, much of the way overlooking Hindley.

Travelling on the A68 north about 5 miles into Northumberland from Co Durham take the right hand turn at the Scales Cross (Minsteracres) cross roads and you cross two small bridges over streams. This is The Bridges.

Not the most familiar view of the castle however the walk along the splendid beach from Seahouses to Bamburgh is a walk not to be missed as the castle slowly comes into view and the splendour and size gradually becomes evident.

Bywell Civic Parish is an area running along side the river Tyne west of Hexham. This is the view from New Ridley, Stocksfield looking across the valley where the sky and landscape are ever changing and the wealth of material for a landscape artist is endless.

This painting of bluebells is based on a scene between the two fords at Stocksfield. Always an image which holds everyone's attention, the sight of a mass of bluebells and the sun shinning through a canopy of fresh green leaves.

This is number 1 of 3 paintings in this set of primrose pictures. It is of a flower which indicates that summer is not very far away and when seen in the countryside as a bed of primroses can be very impressive indeed.

In the Stocksfield area of Northumberland there are a number of smaller areas with the name Ridley. This view can be seen just a very short distance from where I live in New Ridley and is looking towards the Tyne valley.

I do not go out looking for subjects to paint but when out on a frequently walked track, the small fir wood, which had been there for many years to allow the trees to mature, had been felled over the autumn and winter. Amazingly in the spring many foxglove plants appeared, the seed of which must have lain dormant for many years.

Rowley is on the A68 just outside Castleside, near Consett. The sunrise in winter, much easier to get out of bed for than in the summer, creates a completely different picture which I found very interesting.

This is a painting of one of the two cathedrals in Newcastle, both of which are spectacular buildings but as yet I have not painted St. Mary's - watch this space. Since painting this picture the trees have been removed and the area has been re-designed.

One of the advantages of painting a begonia plant is that the flowers last for quite a considerable length of time so it does not have to be done in one sitting, unlike most cut flowers. I was particularly interested in the deep red flowers against the dark green leaves.
